Normaglen Fields Kipp , Age: 90
June 08, 1932 - May 24, 2023

Normaglen Fields Kipp was born in June 1932 in Atlanta, Georgia. Her parents were Glenn
Tyree Fields, an airmail pilot, and Mabel Norma Greer, a singer and pianist. When Normaglen
was seven months old, her father died in an airplane crash while flying in dense fog. Normaglen
was raised by her mother, aunts, and grandparents in the Covington, Kentucky, area, where she
graduated from Dixie Heights High School. A talented singer and pianist, she received a
Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Kentucky in 1954.
She pursued graduate studies in the new field of radio and television broadcasting at Indiana
University, where she met Richard Kipp, an ROTC cadet who was completing his bachelor’s
degree. In October 1955, they were married, and Dick continued his service with the Army.
While they were stationed in Fort Polk, Louisiana, they welcomed their first child. After Dick
completed his service and their second child was born, they packed all their belongings into a
small U-Haul trailer and moved to faraway Seattle, Washington. A third child arrived, and they
moved south to the Washington State capitol, Olympia. Ultimately their brood totaled seven
children.
Normaglen was an engaged stay-at-home mother, teaching her children to read before they
started school and providing them with an endless supply of books, drawing paper, paints,
crayons, and Play-Doh to encourage learning and creativity. She loved music ranging from
Mozart and Bach to Brubeck and the Beatles and exposed her family to great music on the big
Motorola record player. She also ensured that her children were familiar with the classics—that
is, the works of Charlie Chaplin, Mel Brooks, and Monty Python. She was a skilled seamstress
and enjoyed decorating for the holidays. She possessed a natural Southern charm, but she also
had an independent streak. In her late 30s, she learned to drive and got her first license. In her
mid-40s, she taught herself computer programming—still a novelty in the late 1970s—and
worked for many years as a data processing manager and instructor for the state of
Washington.
Although she and Dick divorced, they remained congenial co-parents and friends. After retiring,
she moved to Everett, Washington, where she proudly bought herself a townhouse. She lived
there until 2016, when she moved to a retirement community in Lynnwood. She kept herself
busy reading voraciously about quantum physics, arts and culture, and metaphysics; watching
science fiction and fantasy programs; and spending time with her growing family and a
succession of cats.
Normaglen took her last breath on May 24, 2023, in the arms of her children. She was preceded
in death by her parents and infant son, Matthew. She is survived by her seven children, their
spouses, and numerous grandchildren: Carrie and Andy Howard, Allison, Tessa, Maisie, and
Lily; Kevin Kipp and Cheryl Tompkins; Christie Kipp, Sam, and Zoe; Lisa Kipp, Ashmeena, and
Raj; Shawn and Tom Harper, Alexander, Andrew, and Sasha Dempewolf; Shannon Kipp and
Brandon Jepson and Jasper; and David and Angie Kipp, Megan, Dana Schuetz, and Hayley
Barto. She was one of a kind, and we will cherish her legacy.
