Eric Alan Berger, a devoted husband, loving father, and esteemed civil engineer, passed
away on January 12, 2024, in Olympia WA. Born in Decorah, Iowa, on May 20, 1948, to
Marion Sophia Severson and Kenneth Luther Berger. Eric's journey took him from the
heartland to the West Coast, leaving an enduring legacy of dedication, passion, and a
profound impact on those who had the privilege of knowing him.

A graduate of Stanford University, with a MS in Construction Management, Civil
Engineering, following a BS degree from California State University, Chico, Eric's
academic achievements were a testament to his commitment to excellence. Armed with
knowledge and a thirst for innovation, he embarked on a career in civil engineering that
would span decades taking him to Sacramento, CA; Avery, ID; Clarkston, WA; Olympia,
WA and Fort Worth, TX.

Dedicated to the advancement of his field, Eric was associated with the Association of
Asphalt Paving Technologist (AAPT) and the American Society for Testing and Materials
(ASTM). His involvement in these organizations reflected not only his professional
commitment but also his desire to contribute to the broader community of engineers and
innovators.

His professional journey led him to serve as the Director of the County Road
Administration Board part of the government organization of Washington State, where
he played a pivotal role in shaping infrastructure and transportation policies allowing
county roads in the state of Washington to be consistently safe throughout the state.
In the realm of innovation, Eric held a patent through Lhoist Group, showcasing his
pioneering work in stabilizing chemical lime in asphalt, soils, dikes and levees. His
contributions to this field were not just a testament to his technical prowess but also to
his dedication to finding sustainable solutions that would leave a lasting impact.
At home, Eric was not just a skilled engineer but a cherished husband to Nancy and a
nurturing father to his son, Sven. He found joy in reading a wide range of topics, the
San Francisco Giants baseball team, gardening, brewing beer and grilling really good
BBQ. He retired in 2014, but still managed a small consulting firm, which included
editing a professional book about asphalt and lime.

Eric Berger's passing leaves a void that words cannot fill, but his memory will forever be
etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He was a great storyteller
embellishing his many life events, had a wonderful laugh and a twinkle in his eye. He
had great regard for his many friends. As we mourn the loss of a remarkable individual,
