Woodlawn Funeral Home Obituaries

Leslie Giselle Campbell , Age: 66
December 16, 1956 - August 27, 2023

Leslie Giselle Campbell peacefully passed away on August 27, 2023, in Thurston
County, WA. She was a cherished mother, wife, sister, daughter, grandma, and “Nana.”
Leslie was born in McAllen, TX on December 16, 1956, to Minoru and Yeki “Edith”
Hanami Ishino. Leslie and her family lived in Texas until her father passed away. It was
then, at age eight, that her family moved to Rexburg, ID to live on her Uncle Yes and
Auntie Fumi’s farm. She was the second of four children. She and her older sister Karie
and younger brothers, Matthew and Roger, spent the rest of their childhood on the
family farm.
Leslie attended Madison High School and then earned an associate degree in Nursing
from the College of Southern Idaho. While living in Twin Falls, she met her husband of
44 years, Neal Jay Campbell. On February 16, 1979, they were sealed for time and all
eternity in the Idaho Falls Temple. As she loved to recall, they exited the temple that day
to a fresh blanket of beautiful white snow. For Leslie, it was one of her most cherished
memories.
After graduating, Leslie began her career in nursing, working for the hospital in Twin
Falls, ID, Logan, UT and then a lengthy and fulfilling 31 years on the orthopedic floor of
Providence Saint Peter’s Hospital in Olympia, WA.
While living in Logan, Neal and Leslie had the first three of their five children together:
Andrea, Candice, and Logan. After Neal graduated in 1984 and got a job in Olympia,
WA, their family relocated. It was there that they had their son Eric and 9 years later her
“baby boy”, Ian.
Leslie was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. When she was
only 15 years old, she became the first member of her family to join the church. Over
the years she served diligently in many callings and was steadfast in her faith until her
passing.
Leslie was an attentive, supportive, and protective parent. She enjoyed being a mom
and worked nights her entire career to ensure all her children had a parent at home with
them day or night. Working every other week allowed her to chauffer her children to
their many activities.
When she wasn’t busy being a wife and mother, she loved to do puzzles and read. Her
favorite books were mystery novels.  Leslie loved garage sales and was an avid
collector of many things. She filled her home with stuffed animals, mainly teddy bears,
dolls and knick knacks.
Leslie loved long road trips. Whether visiting her favorite place, Yellowstone, or traveling
across the country, she loved seeing it all. Much to her children’s dismay, there wasn’t a
monument or viewpoint she didn’t want to stop and visit. Leslie was someone that
everyone loved.  She was a person who was always true to herself.  What you saw is
what you got -- a loving, loyal, and caring person.

Leslie is preceded in death by her parents: Minoru and Yeki “Edith” Hanami Ishino,
grandparents Kinkichi and Saku Hori Ishino, and Shinshiro and Asa Sase Hanami. She
is survived by: her husband Neal Campbell, children Andrea (Luis) Sanchez, Candice
Chambers, Logan (Jennifer) Campbell, Eric (Susanne) Campbell, Ian (Karla) Campbell,
siblings, Karie Ishino, Matthew (Michele) Ishino, Roger (Barbara) Ishino, and loving
nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

Dear Campbell Family, We wish to express our deepest sympathy at the passing of your beloved Leslie. We also want to share a memory in which she blessed our lives. During the summer of 1997 my youngest daughter Miranda decided to go on the 3 or 4 day Lacey Stake Youth Trek which simulated a few experiences the early Utah pioneers had. Leslie was Lacey Stake's nurse who made sure the youth were fit enough to go. She told Miranda it was ok to go but she must see a doctor immediately when she got back from the trek. Leslie told her she had high blood pressure. On the trek many youth pitched in to help Miranda pull her handcart load as she became increasingly tired. Upon her return and visit to the doctor we learned she had a heart defect - a "coarctation of the aorta" in which the aorta had narrowed and not much blood was getting through. That same day she was admitted to Seattle Children's Hospital where she was operated on before her 16th birthday. The surgery was successful and Miranda has since married and has 3 lovely children. As a family we are forever grateful to Leslie for being the first to alert us to Miranda's condition in time to seek lifesaving medical procedures. We also want to thank Neal for his Christlike example of compassionate service in caring for Leslie. May God bless you all, Allen & Janene Jolley & Family

Dear Neal and family, I was saddened to hear of Leslie's passing. Even though probably a blessing, it is always still so very hard to lose a wife and mother. Leslie definitely was a special person...such a hard worker and a devoted wife and mother who loved her family so very much. I'm so glad our paths crossed while we lived in Lacey and I had a chance to get to know her and serve with her. May you be blessed, Neal, for your loving care of Leslie over the time of her debilitating illness. Sending much love to all of you and prayers for strength and for peace at this difficult time. With love, Julie Wilkins
