Woodlawn Funeral Home Obituaries

Philip Youngquist , Age: 80
October 02, 1942 - July 05, 2023

Philip Youngquist Jr., husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, was called to be with the Lord on July 5, 2023. Born in Seattle on October 2, 1942, to Phil and Margie Youngquist, he was to be the older brother of sister Leanne (Youngquist) Edelblute. The family moved a lot in the Seattle area, finally settling on the shores of the Hood Canal in Poulsbo, where he enjoyed many family gatherings throughout the years. He was a freshman at Queen Anne High School before attending North Kitsap High School, where he joined activities such as baseball, football, and leadership activities resulting in being voted Student Body President. He graduated in 1960. He went on to attend Olympic College for his Associate of Arts Degree before attending Seattle Pacific University, graduating with a degree in Political Science. Shortly thereafter, he was inducted into the Army in 1966, and spent the next couple of years at Fort Hood, Texas. After the military he came back home to the Olympia area and began his career at the Employment Security Department where he made many lifelong friends, including his future wife and brother-in-law.  He retired in 1992, but went on to work for Custom, Inc., providing services to credit unions, and also worked at the Scott Lake Golf Course Clubhouse. He was also the Director of the Employment Security Credit Union for 30 years.

He married the love of his life, Robin Degon, in a fairy-tale wedding on the shores of Poulsbo. It was the beginning of his greatest adventure of 41 years, resulting in two amazing sons, Brett and Ryan and a lifetime of memories.

Coming from strong Swedish stock, being on the water and woodworking coursed through the veins of the Youngquist clan. Whether working at the Youngquist Boats facility in Seattle or building and driving a hydroplane to race on the Hood Canal, Phil was never far from the water. From fishing on Hood Canal, Pt. Alberni, Canada, and surrounding areas with his family to carp fishing at his wife’s family resort on Long Lake, and ending with salmon fishing on the Kenai River at the family-built cabin in Alaska, he was always game to drop a line and see what he could catch.

Other interests included classic cars-beginning with a ‘49 Chevy, a red and white Studebaker, a ‘57 black Chevy pick-up truck, ‘68 Dodge Charger, and a ‘71 Corvette to name a few. He bought a ‘71 Chevy pick-up for his eldest son’s first car and his youngest son would carry on the tradition by purchasing a ‘71 El Camino.

Golfing was another interest. He played in many tournaments In Washington, Nevada, and Alaska. He made many friends along the way, playing at Capitol Golf Course, Scott Lake Golf Course, and even in Alaska.  Owing to his generosity, it was not uncommon for Phil to give away golf clubs to anyone in need to help or encourage the love of the game. Later in life, Phil played in a senior bowling league with his brother-in-law, Phil.

Phil’s faith played a central role in his life. The Youngquists were a founding family in the Christ Memorial Church in Poulsbo. Later, he served as an usher with his sons at Living Water Church in Olympia. He enjoyed watching faith shows on television and sermons from both  Living Water and True Grace. He was never too busy to share his faith with others.

He was most proud of his family, especially his sons, who brought him great joy. He treasured every recital, baseball and football game as they grew. Later, times spent cheering on local sports teams, sapphire mining, antique hunting, garage saling, and playing with his granddaughter, Rosie, made up some of his favorite memories.

Phil was a kind, generous, and loving man, quick to laugh and tell a story. He will be missed by his family and friends. He leaves a hole in the fabric of our family, which will take time to mend. He joins his father, mother, and sister in Heaven. He is survived by his wife, Robin; his sons, Brett and Ryan; granddaughter, Rosie; and a grandbaby who will arrive in November.

As he would say to his wife and son every night before heading to bed with a wave, “Night, guys!”
