December 19, 1938 - April 28, 2022

Sidna P. Wimmer Col. (Retired)

Colonel (US Army, retired) Sidna P. Wimmer, 83, completed his life journey on April 28, 2022, passing peacefully at St. Peters Hospital (Olympia, WA) due to complications from lymphoma cancer. His high school sweetheart and wife of 61 years, Margaret Poff Wimmer, was at his side.

Sid lived a life dedicated to service of country and family. He retired June 30, 1993, after 27 years active duty with US Army Nurse Corps, honorably serving as Chief of Anesthesia while assigned to Dwight D. Eisenhower Medical Center (Augusta, GA), Tripler Army Medical Center (Honolulu, HI) and Madigan Army Medical Center (Fort Lewis, WA).

Born December 19, 1938, and raised in Floyd County, VA, Sid was raised by stepfather Wallace C. King and Kate Epperly Wimmer King (both deceased) and was one of nine siblings – four sisters and four brothers. His father, Earl P. Wimmer, died when Sid was two.

Sid attended the University of Virginia, SUNY, Morehead and Pepperdine, and earned a Masters of Health Care Administration from Central Michigan. He received his anesthesia training at Letterman Army Medical center at the Presidio, San Francisco, CA. His passion for education and compassion to help others led him into nursing and eventually US Army officer, where he toured in Viet Nam, and later overseas in South Korea and Hawaii. Sid also served in hospitals at Fort Lee, VA; Fort Campbell, KY; San Antonio, TX; and the US Military Academy in West Point, NY.

Awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon, and Army Service Ribbon. He was inducted into the Order of Military Medical Merit in 1986. He also served as adjunct faculty of the State of University of Buffalo, NY, and Texas Wesleyan University, Fort Worth Texas/US Army Nurse Anesthesia Program.

Sid is survived by his sister Sarah Quesenberry (husband Donnie) of Willis, VA, and brother John King (wife Sandra) of Marietta, GA. Sid’s strong but thrice surgically repaired heart was full of pride for his daughter Melanie Hope (Olympia, WA), son Christopher (married to Jacqueline Wimmer), and grandchildren Jack Michael (16) and Ava Sydney Grace (13) of Rancho Mission Viejo, CA.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to US Heart Association or any cancer charity. Per his request, no services are planned. Internment will be at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, WA.
