Miyoko Nakamura Carr

Miyoko Carr, age 93, whose greatest love was her family, passed away peacefully at home in Olympia, Washington, on May 1st, 2022.  She was born in Kyoto, Japan, to Chiemon and Mitsu Nakamura on November 3, 1928.  She was the second youngest of nine children.

Miyoko met Harold DeWayne Carr, Army CSM (Ret) when he was stationed in Japan during the Korean War.  They fell in love and were married on October 3rd, 1951.   They first arrived in Seattle and then relocated to Harold’s hometown of Des Arc, Arkansas to be near Harold’s family.  There they had one child, Harold Dean Carr.

Over the next 20 years, an Army wife, Miyoko, was very loving and dedicated to the well-being and success of her husband and son.  They were stationed in many places over the next 20 years.  She managed the household and raising Harold Dean while her husband was sent to Vietnam during the war.  Following Harold’s retirement from the Army, Miyoko continued to support the success of their endeavors as owners of a Mr. Steak restaurant in Manhattan, Kansas.  After another 20 years in the restaurant industry, Harold again retired and they decided to move to Olympia, Washington to be near their son and grandchildren, and eventually great grandchildren.

Miyoko and Harold celebrated 71 years of marriage.

Miyoko was a member of the Church of Christ. Home always came first for her. She dedicated her whole life to caring for her family.   She loved to cook, crochet, and keep a clean house.  She was a gracious hostess and always had a glass of iced tea ready for any company.

Miyoko is survived by her beloved spouse, Harold Carr, Sr; and her son Harold Dean Carr (Dorrie) and her youngest sister in Japan, Chizuko.  She is also survived by four grandchildren: Sonya Coleman, Amanda Montgomery (Michael), Jerry Gorum (Kristin), and Shelly Thomas (Rob), and six great-grandchildren: Summer, Naomi, Caleb, Jaxon, Maddox, and Connor (all Washingtonians).

The Celebration of Miyoko’s life will take place Saturday, June 4th, 2022, at 11am, at Woodlawn Funeral Home (5930 Mullen Road SE, Lacey WA 98503).  Short graveside and then reception will follow.
