Albert Jay Weil

1928–2021

Albert “Al” Jay Weil, CDR, USN, Ret., “flew west” on December 21st, 2021.  He peacefully went on to be with the Lord at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Gig Harbor, WA.  He had struggled for years with worsening dementia. He will be greatly missed.

Al was born in 1928 in Peoria, Illinois, to the late Albert Joseph Weil and Cosette (Baird) Weil. His family then moved to Muncie, Indiana, where he graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1945 and immediately enlisted in the Navy. As part of his pilot training program, he attended UC Berkeley and received a degree in Mathematics. He retired as a commander after 22 years as a naval aviator. He then went on to fly for World Airways from 1967 until retiring as captain in 1986. Once he hung up his wings, he moved from California to Washington State where he remained an avid runner, then cyclist and even continued to “hit the gym” while in his eighties. He also kept busy with home projects, model cars, reading, sending out countless humorous emails to friends, and of course spending time with his grandchildren whom he adored.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, and younger brother, David Weil. He is survived by his beloved bride of 60 years, Jean (Clark) Weil, his son Kenneth, daughters Karen (Steve Smith) and Diane (Joshua Gonen), his four grandchildren (Noelle, Cailyn, Noah, and Eli), as well as his half- brother, Robert Weil.

Although he loved flying, driving his ‘68 Dodge Charger, and telling jokes and stories, Al’s true passion was protecting and providing for his family which he treasured. He was a loyal and loving husband, dad, papa, and friend, and will be remembered with tremendous respect, admiration, and love. Many thanks to the care he received by the staff at the Lodge at Mallard’s Landing over the last four and a half years.
