Lenna Haferland died on October 6th, 2021 in Olympia, Washington.  She was born February 13, 1931, in Decatur, Illinois to Lucille and Harry Wilking.  She attended Millikin University and married Frank Haferland, Jr. on December 6, 1952.  Since her husband was in the Air Force she spent most of her adult life moving her family to many bases across the United States and to Okinawa, Japan.

Mrs. Haferland graduated cum laude from Central State College with a degree in Elementary Education and earned her master’s degree in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma.  She taught school in Oklahoma City and Altus, Oklahoma until her retirement in 1993.

Mrs. Haferland was a fierce friend, a voracious reader as well as an avid gardener.  She was a dog person who enjoyed spoiling her basset hounds.  She also was a human rights activist and had an intense interest in politics.  She was passionate to learn about and experience different cultures which lead her to travel extensively including Japan, England, Italy, the Galapagos Islands, Egypt, Greece, Turkey, Bhutan, China and Tibet.

Mrs. Haferland was an awesome teacher who shared her love of books and travel with her students in many unique and interesting ways.  She genuinely cared about all her students and encouraged them to do better than their best and to open themselves to the world in order to experience more than what was right in front of them.

Mrs. Haferland was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Haferland and their son, Tony Haferland.  She is survived by two daughters, Lydia Hawkins and her husband, Jeffrey Hawkins; Jane Walker and her husband, Mike Walker; her daughter-in-law, Teresa Haferland; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
